241102.Equipment Mechanic II (Maintenance)



GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Under the general direction of a Fleet Supervisor, the Fleet Technician II is responsible for inspecting, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing a variety of vehicles and equipment, including automotive, diesel, construction, and agricultural machinery. This position includes overseeing subordinate mechanics, acting as a Lead Worker, and managing the operations of a small repair shop or garage when applicable. The technician must possess strong technical aptitude and diagnostic skills, utilizing computer interfaces and diagnostic tools to troubleshoot vehicle systems effectively. Additionally, the Fleet Technician II is responsible for performing both minor and major repairs, maintaining accurate maintenance records, and ensuring compliance with preventative maintenance and safety programs. This role requires the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment while providing guidance and support to team members.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair a variety of vehicles and equipment, including automotive, light and heavy-duty diesel vehicles, and construction machinery.
  • Fabricate custom parts from metal and other materials as needed to support repair and maintenance activities.
  • Oversee the work of subordinate mechanics, acting as a Lead Worker by providing technical assistance and guidance.
  • Utilize computer interfaces and diagnostic tools, including generic code scanners, to troubleshoot vehicle systems and obtain trouble codes from the Engine Control Module (ECM).
  • Perform both minor and major repairs on vehicles and equipment, including disassembly, replacement, and overhaul of mechanical systems.
  • Manage the operations of a small repair shop or garage, ensuring efficient workflow and maintenance activities.
  • Check and maintain accurate maintenance reports and records to document work performed and materials used.
  • Support other trades based on operational requirements to ensure comprehensive maintenance coverage.
  • Monitor and enforce preventative maintenance and safety programs to ensure compliance and proper equipment upkeep.
  • Respond to service calls as required, providing timely and effective repairs to minimize downtime.
  • Conduct regular inspections of equipment and vehicles to identify maintenance needs and ensure optimal performance.
  • Participate in training and development opportunities to enhance technical skills and knowledge in fleet maintenance.
  • Collaborate with team members to prioritize tasks and ensure efficient completion of maintenance assignments.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment, ensuring safety and accessibility of tools and equipment.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors and team members regarding project status, challenges, and solutions.
  • Regular and reliable attendance is required as an essential function of the position.

COMPENSATION

$24.00-$32.00 per hour based on experience

REQUIRED FOR ALL HCAA JOBS

 

  • In the event of an emergency or disaster that impacts the Hillsborough County Aviation Authority (HCAA), an employee may be required to respond promptly to duties and responsibilities as assigned by the employee's department or the HCAA Emergency Operations Center (EOC). Such assignments may be before, during, or after the emergency/disaster.
  • Complies with all HCAA Policies, Procedures, and Standards.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS (EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS)

 

·         High School Diploma or equivalent.  

·         Three (3) years of experience repairing and maintaining mechanical equipment, such as automobiles, trucks, or lawn maintenance equipment. 

·         Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) Certification, or able to obtain within six (6) months of hire but required within 180 Days. Due to Certification testing availability, time may be extended. 

·         Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification, including A or T Series Brakes and Suspension, or able to obtain within 6 (six) months of hire, but required within 180 days of hire. Due to Certification testing availability, time may be extended.

Or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that would reasonably be expected to provide the job-related competencies noted below.

·         Must possess a valid, current Florida Driver License at the level required for the position when operating an Authority vehicle or driving on behalf of the Authority.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of materials, tools, and methods used in the repair, maintenance, and servicing of various vehicles and equipment.
  • Knowledge of troubleshooting and diagnostic tools, techniques, and methods of repair for automotive and heavy equipment.
  • Knowledge of parts requirements, including ordering and recording procedures to ensure timely maintenance.
  • Knowledge of hydraulic system repair, maintenance, and servicing practices to support various equipment.
  • Knowledge of electrical systems, including hybrid, electric, AC/DC, and high-voltage vehicle systems.
  • Knowledge of the functions, services, procedures, and regulations of the Fleet Maintenance Department.
  • Skill in demonstrating effective repair procedures and maintenance techniques to subordinate mechanics.
  • Skill in using shop tools and equipment safely and effectively in maintenance tasks.
  • Skill in utilizing various test equipment to troubleshoot vehicle and equipment problems accurately.
  • Ability to troubleshoot, maintain, and repair a wide range of vehicles and equipment efficiently.
  • Ability to operate motorized equipment safely and in compliance with operational standards.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and oversee the work of others, ensuring tasks are completed effectively.
  • Ability to document activities accurately and maintain related records and logs for maintenance operations.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment, adapting to changing priorities and urgent situations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.  
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others within and outside the Authority.  
  • Ability to handle restricted, sensitive, and confidential information.  
  • Ability to provide outstanding customer service, serve the public, and represent the Authority with courtesy and professionalism.
