Fiber Optic Field Technician (Engineering)
Job Summary: Fiber Optic Field Technicians are responsible for fiber to the home and associated equipment installation. This position also works with customers to demonstrate equipment use, troubleshoot and support technical issues affecting service and explaining service features.
Essential Duties
Perform fiber optic installations, disconnects, downgrades, and upgrades at customer premises, including fiber mechanical/fusion splicing. Test and repair fiber optic internet services as part of preventative and corrective maintenance activities. Update digital documentation in databases and other programs. Work closely with Network Engineers, electric utility personnel, Customer Service Representatives and residential/business customers and non-customers. Assist with fiber distribution work as needed. Maintain knowledge of current installation technical principles and industry standards. Perform all other tasks as assigned.
Essential Qualifications
High School diploma or GED Experience working in construction, electrical, technical, or similar field Problem solver with technical aptitude and general computer software application skills. Communication skills, professionalism, time management, organization, critical thinking, responsibility/reliability, and customer service aptitude. Experience working with hand tools and ability to interpret results from electronic tools such as meters and handheld devices. Valid Drivers license with a satisfactory driving record within company standards. Valid Michigan drivers license with a satisfactory driving record within company standards.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working as a fiber optic installation technician. Networking and/or cable installation technical certification such as CCENT, CompTIA A+, CNCI, BISCI, or similar. Effective workplace skills as demonstrated through WorkKeys assessments (Workplace Documents 5, Graphic Literacy 4, Workplace Observation - 3)
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
Proximity to environmental hazards associated with electrical, mechanical, and/or power equipment. Outside working conditions with frequent exposure to extreme hot or cold weather conditions. Exposure to heights while working on poles, ladders, and out of utility bucket trucks.
