Your Role: Tech Service Development Scientist
As a Tech Service Development Scientist at Clinton Laboratories, you will play a pivotal role in advancing the manufacturing processes for Elanco's fermentation-based site. You'll leverage your expertise in laboratory and pilot-scale processes to support process development and troubleshoot production challenges. Your work will involve developing innovative models, driving continuous improvement in fermentation productivity, and establishing new technical capabilities to support current and future product lines. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams, including site engineers, fermentation scientists, and product development specialists, to ensure that processes are efficient, scalable, and cost-effective. This is an exciting opportunity to shape new product lines, enhance existing processes, and influence the overall direction of the manufacturing site.
Your Responsibilities:
Develop and Run Lab/Pilot Models: Design, implement, and manage laboratory and pilot-scale models that replicate potential process changes or new product lines. Work closely with site engineers and fermentation pilot plant teams to ensure models effectively simulate real-world conditions and capture critical data, reducing risks before making capital investments or scaling up production.
Identify New Process and Product Opportunities: Collaborate with site leadership and cross-functional teams to identify areas for productivity improvement. Assess the feasibility of new processes, equipment, or product lines, and perform cost-benefit analysis to prioritize projects based on their potential business value and required resources.
Develop and Implement Analytical Testing Regimens: Partner with Tech Service fermentation scientists to establish a robust analytical testing framework for monitoring raw material variability, which significantly impacts process consistency and performance. Oversee testing for new products or process changes to evaluate effectiveness and ensure product quality. This includes developing testing protocols, managing testing schedules, and interpreting results to inform process decisions.
Establish and Maintain Key Technical Partnerships: Forge strong relationships with critical internal teams, such as the Clinton QCL group, Indy Pilot Plant team, and Manufacturing/Engineering personnel, to enhance cross-functional collaboration. Leverage these partnerships to drive the success of process development efforts and improve overall site performance.
Investigate and Implement Process Diagnostic Improvements: Assess existing process measurement systems and work to improve diagnostics or introduce new technologies to better monitor and optimize production. This may involve researching and implementing new online diagnostic tools or improving current equipment to enhance process control and efficiency, contributing to reduced variability and improved product yield.
What You Need to Succeed (minimum qualifications):
Education: Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Chemistry, or a related scientific field.
Required Experience: Must have laboratory and advanced analytical skills, and ability to understand bioprocessing/fermentation to develop, monitor, and optimize manufacturing processes.
Top 2 skills: Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills; Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively collaborate across teams and present technical findings.
What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (preferred qualifications):
Hands-on experience in fermentation, bioprocessing, or related fields with a focus on process scale-up and optimization.
Proficiency in process modeling, lab/pilot-scale experiments, and analytical testing techniques.
Strong background in process engineering, including knowledge of process optimization, control systems, and troubleshooting methodologies.
Ability to manage the capital approval process for equipment purchases, including creating business cases and justifications.
A proactive and innovative mindset with a passion for continuous process improvement and the ability to influence others in a collaborative setting.
Additional Information:
Travel: Occasional travel required for collaboration with internal teams and external partners.
Location: Clinton Laboratories in Clinton, IN
