ORGANIZATIONAL SUMMARY:
The USF Technology Transfer Office (TTO) is responsible for the identification, evaluation, development, protection and utilization of intellectual property rights that result from USF research activities and from the activities of USF researchers in affiliated hospitals and other off-site facilities. Clients of department include USF faculty and staff researchers and innovators, venture and technology companies desiring to license USF technologies and VC and other investors interested in investing in USF technology innovation.
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Technology Scout reports directly to the appropriate senior administrator at the Technology transfer Office (TTO) at the University of South Florida (USF) campus. This position manages the evaluation, protection, and marketing of USF inventions with the goal of bringing innovative new technologies to market and fostering economic growth. The technology scout will work with diverse faculty who are conducting innovative research to identify novel technologies that solve real-world problems. In addition, they will also cultivate relationships with external parties such as high-tech businesses, local innovation ecosystems, universities, and investors. The candidate will have exceptional team working abilities, communication skills, be service-minded as well as hold in-depth knowledge in technological sales and marketing.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Responsible for scouting technology opportunities that enable innovation and bring the technology to market. This includes visiting and speaking with staff on all three campuses and associated facilities to learn more about their innovations. Serves as the first point of contact for incoming interested parties in USF technologies. Responds to any initial questions; provides non-confidential information related to the technology and requested non-disclosure agreements when necessary; and arranges follow-up meetings with the assigned attorney for potential negotiation.
Evaluate current and future technology and "know how" across the globe to create technical insight that informs the ideal technology road maps. Use deep technical expertise to undertake due diligence and translate new science/technology so the business can evaluate the potential commercial opportunity. Ensures stakeholder alignment to innovation priorities and project plans
Champions a proactive mindset supporting, encouraging and facilitates staff to engage in continuous improvement activities. Participates in formulating and implementing policies and procedures. Research and analyze high level trends and developments impacting the industry to provide help identifying new business opportunities and potential licensee
Work collaboratively with department senior leadership team daily and will require travel when needed. Oversees specialized programs and workshops from identification to execution. Coordinates company participation according to company need assessment. Will identify and drive opportunities to monetize USF applications.
This position identifies technologies with commercial applications; evaluates the commercial potential of inventions; identifies potential licensees; technical information for marketing purposes; develops and implements specific marketing strategies for each technology.
Performs other duties as assigned.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
MINIMUM:
This position requires a Master's degree in business, physical sciences, or engineering with three years of business experience in Product Development, R&D, technology transfer, or digital licensing; Bachelor's degree in those same fields with a minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience. Work experience may not be substituted for the Bachelor's degree requirement for this position.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS :
Master's degree in business, physical sciences, engineering with four years of business experience in Product/business Development, R&D, technology transfer, or digital licensing. Ability to work effectively in teams and manage multiple projects. Previous experience in sourcing promising technologies.
