ORGANIZATIONAL SUMMARY:
The University of South Florida (USF) Institute for Applied Engineering (IAE) is a Florida not-for-profit corporation and direct support organization within the USF ecosystem. The IAE mission is to provide agile, high value engineering products and services to enhance the performance, effectiveness, and capabilities of its customers to include the Department of Defense and other federal and industry partners.
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Direct Support Engineer (DSE) III works directly with customers at various facilities at the customer's direction on the design, development, testing, documentation, and delivery of customer projects, research, and technological products. This position collaborates with teams of engineers to interact with end-users, gather requirements, evaluate technical approaches, perform engineering tradeoff analyses, develop designs, construct, and test concepts, systems, and products. DSEs are subject matter experts (SME) with deep hands-on experience in their engineering discipline(s) who advise customer leadership on technologies and best practices in their respective engineering discipline(s). The DSE III will provide organizational and cross-team leadership and will mentor and coach personnel on multidisciplinary technical projects as required by the customer.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be eligible for a TS/SCI security clearance. Experience designing and developing complex software systems for collaborative autonomous systems.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
-Works directly with customer stakeholders at customer locations to develop and document functional and quality attribute requirements, use cases, and workflows for systems and products.
-Utilize extensive hands-on expertise within their respective engineering discpline(s) to design and develop complex systems and products.
-Evaluates and assesses architectural and detailed technological designs to identify gaps, problems, and issues impacting the successful development of systems and products.
-Advise customer leadership on engineering processes, best practices, standards, and technologies to ensure proper function and enable seamless operation between systems, subsystems, and components.
-Provides organizational technical leadership across multiple teams as required.
-Mentors, and coaches multi-disciplinary engineering teams to design and develop technologies, systems, components, and engineering processes to meet the customer's systemic requirements.
-Evaluate various technologies, tools, practices for use in systems design, development, and test.
-Documents and communicates complex systems architectures, detailed designs, developmental processes, and various technical reports as needed.
Plan, document, coordinate, and execute systems test strategies to assess and verify systemic fitness for purpose (functional operation, performance, operational effectiveness).
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
MINIMUM:
This position requires a bachelor's degree in engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physical or Biological Sciences (as required by position requirements) and 9 years of relevant experience. Must be eligible for a TS/SCI security clearance.
PREFERRED:
-In-depth, hands-on, expertise within one or more engineering discipline(s)
-Experience designing and developing complex, multidisciplinary systems and systems components.
-Experience designing and developing systems for key quality attribute requirements such as: performance, security, scalability, portability, & safety.
-Experience with the full systems development lifecycles and experience with various development process frameworks (e.g.waterfall, system-V, agile).
-Experience with instantiating, measuring, and evaluating engineering processes for efficiency and identifying opportunities for improvement.
-Experience with planning and coordinating complex, multidisciplinary systems research and development efforts among multiple engineering teams across the organization.
-Experience with technical team and leadership; mentoring and coaching junior engineers.
-Experience evaluating and quantifying alternatives and tradeoffs in complex engineering projects.
-Hands-on experience with various engineering tools commensurate with their discipline expertise (e.g., MATLAB, Jira, compilers, RF analysis, simulation, documentation tools)
-Excellent written and oral communication skills and able to communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical audiences to include peers and senior customer leadership.
