The Warm Line is a non-crisis phone and instant messaging service in California, staffed entirely by individuals with lived experience of mental health challenges, providing information, resources, and emotional support 24/7. As a Peer Support Specialist, you will offer vital one-on-one peer support by responding to calls from individuals with diverse experiences and needs, utilizing a warm, personal, and nonjudgmental approach. This role, under direct supervision, assists in service delivery to consumers and performs related work as required.
How will I contribute
Answer incoming calls and returning voicemails. Utilize active listening and peer skills to assess callers' needs. Collect and record demographic and survey information accurately. Handle some crisis and high-risk calls in accordance with WL procedures. Attend and participate in regular staff meetings and one-on-one supervision sessions. Adhere to and support the implementation of all policies and procedures, including confidentiality agreements. Be flexible with hours, as this is a 24/7 program.* Assist in outreaching when needed. Interact professionally with staff and the public. Effectively manage stress-related situations. Demonstrate empathy and understanding towards callers. Perform other duties as assigned to support the overall functioning and success of the program.*.
What I bring
High School Diploma (or Equivalent) Class C Driving License Experience working with the public. Must be engaged in personal wellness and recovery if a consumer. Must know local resources Must be a current or past consumer of mental health services or a family member of a consumer if program requires. Advanced skills in crisis intervention, conflict resolution, and comprehensive knowledge of resources and services. Demonstrated ability to independently manage client interactions, respond to a wider range of needs, and take on more complex cases with less oversight. Must possess strong communication and active listening skills to effectively engage with clients. They must demonstrate empathy and a nonjudgmental approach, ensuring a supportive environment for individuals seeking assistance. Additionally, the ability to multitask and manage time efficiently is essential, as is the capacity to handle stress-related situations with composure. Problem-solving skills and a commitment to recovery values will further enhance effectiveness in this role. Demonstrated interest in the care of individuals with mental illness. Ability to communicate well with consumers. Must exhibit compassion, patience, and resilience, fostering a supportive atmosphere for clients. Open-minded and culturally sensitive, understanding the diverse backgrounds and experiences of those seeking support. Strong interpersonal skills are essential to build rapport and trust with clients. Additionally, a proactive attitude and willingness to learn and grow within the role are important characteristics for success as a Peer Support Specialist.
